Nothing develops a range of first-party software, applications and developer tools, designed to support its ecosystem of smartphones and audio devices. The company's software strategy and design focuses on minimalism and seamless integration between its devices. Their software portfolio includes the Android-based Nothing OS, Glyph Interface tools and projects under the Essential branding.
Nothing OS
Nothing OS is Nothing's Android-based operating system, designed for Nothing and CMF by Nothing devices. It was first introduced alongside Phone (1) in 2022 and has undergone significant updates and improvements in the years since. It combines a near-stock Android experience with custom visual elements and widgets inspired by minimalism, dot-matrix displays and monochrome design when paired with the Nothing Icon Pack.
Major OS versions
- Nothing OS 1.0, launched with Phone (1) in 2022.
- Nothing OS 2.0 introduced in 2023 redesigned iconography, widgets and enhanced Glyph functions.
- Nothing OS 3.0 released in 2024 with deeper integrations and widgets, animations and design refinements.
- Nothing OS 4.0 in 2025 with further design enhancements and quality of life upgrades.[1]
Glyph Interface
Nothing OS natively supports Nothing's Glyph Interface system both in its original form and the newer Glyph Matrix and Glyph Bar versions, allowing users to customise ringtones and notification sounds, as well as setting Essential Notifications.[2]
Nothing also provides a first-party Glyph Software Developer Kit (Glyph SDK, also known as GDK) which allows third party developers to integrate their apps with the Glyph Interface.[3] This paved the way for apps such as Glyph Museum, which enables users to draw and share art and animations directly on the Glyph Matrix.[4]
Nothing applications
Nothing has released a number of first-party applications, either as companions to its products, or as enhancements to Nothing OS. These include:
- Community Widgets - widgets developed by community members for Nothing OS, before the creation of Essential Apps & Playground.
- Essential Apps - a lightweight interactive site, enabling users to create their own Nothing OS widgets with AI.
- Essential Search - all-in-one smart search tool for the Nothing OS app launcher.
- Essential Space - “your second memory”, to capture thoughts, notes and reminders with the use of the Essential Key on newer devices.
- Essential Voice - an intelligent voice transcription feature that cleans and outputs voice-to-text.
- Glyph Composer - an application allowing users to create custom Glyph ringtones and patterns.
- Glyph Developer Kit - a software development kit for app developers to integrate Glyph functionality into their apps.
- Nothing Gallery - a media gallery with Nothing simplicity and elegance.
- Nothing Warp - an app for sending files, links, images and clipboard content from an Android device to a web browser and vice versa.
- Nothing Weather - a weather application with Nothing design and theming.
- Nothing X - used for firmware updates, ANC control and customisation for all Nothing Ear series, CMF Audio and CMF Watch products.
- Recorder - a voice recorder application with Nothing aesthetics, shipped with Nothing OS.
Discontinued applications
- CMF Watch app - the original companion application for the CMF Watch Pro and CMF Watch Pro 2, now integrated into Nothing X.
- Ear 1 Companion app - used for customising settings and updating firmware for Ear (1), now rebranded to Nothing X.
