Essential Space

Essential Space

Essential Space is Nothing’s AI powered hub for notes, ideas and inspirations, designed for creative thinkers to quickly capture, store and develop their ideas.[1] Completed by the Essential Key on compatible devices such as Phone (3a) series, Phone (3) and CMF Phone 2 Pro, the app allows you to quickly capture information, automatically summarise and organise content and to set reminders to review at a later date.

History & Development

Essential Space debuted with the Phone (3a) series in March 2025, the first phone to feature an Essential Key.[2] The app launched with the ability to capture screenshots, store voice memos, summarise content and create reminders. It has since seen a number of updates including camera app compatibility and Flip to Record, which enables the user to record meetings and receive automated transcripts. Essential Space is part of the Essential suite.

In April 2025, a user hit a “monthly processing limit” which was not a previously communicated restriction.[3] As a result, Nothing increased the initial usage cap to a level that will “comfortably accommodate the vast majority of users”.[4] In line with the Flip to Record feature release, the app now displays “AI Analysis Minutes” which caps at 300 minutes, reset every month.

In May 2025, the 2025 Community Board Observer, Adam Bowman, clarified the usage limits and reassured users that the current core features will remain free. There is no current plan for a subscription service, but Nothing hasn’t ruled this out for more advanced capabilities and to help cover server costs required to support Essential Space’s AI.[5]

On 30 October 2025, alongside Essential Apps & Playground, Nothing announced an expansion to Essential Space and Search called “Memory”. Memory learns your habits, keeps track of previous requests and information and uses them to improve its results. Memories can be deleted by the user, and the feature can be fully disabled in Essential Space settings.[6]

On 6 October 2025, Essential announced a new call recording feature for Essential Space.[7] As of OS 4.0, Phone (3) introduces the AI usage dashboard, “giving you greater transparency over large model activity”.[8]

On 8 January 2026, two new features were released. Firstly, a cropping feature for screenshots before being saved to Essential Space. Second, two optional methods to help prevent accidental presses of the Essential Key: disabling the key while locked or screen off, and requiring a key press to activate before actions are performed.[9] Later in the month, the ability to link captures together for better organisation was also added.[10]

In March 2026, the Essential Space app underwent a design and UX refresh, splitting into two views - “For You” and “Library.” The For You page brings important information to the surface, such as upcoming reminders and events, whereas the Library page contains all other captures. As of this same update, Essential Space automatically recognises and extracts event information from captures. The app update also includes the ability to search captures, a feature which has been highly demanded since its debut.[11] Then, in April 2026, another highly requested feature, cloud storage was introduced. This allows users to back up their captures and sync them across multiple Nothing phones.[12]

The Essential Key

The key enables users to interact with various Essential Space functions: Press the Essential Key to capture and send content to Essential Space, long-press to record a voice note, and double-tap to head straight to all your saved content.[2]

Despite demand from its users, Nothing has never released an official method of remapping the Essential Key. Since its inception, various users have attempted to find workarounds to remap the key, including the use of apps such as Key Mapper.[13] In November 2025, Nothing Community member, Spandan, released an app, titled “The Everything Key”, which enables users to more easily remap the Essential Key with a simple and intuitive user interface. The app allows users to set custom quick actions, such as toggling the flashlight, ring mode and media control with double and triple press Essential Key actions.[14]

Features

Essential Space features include taking screenshots or photos with voice memos, creating reminders, call recording and Flip to Record. There are a number of widgets available to display the most recent capture or upcoming reminders.

New features are constantly being released under the Essential brand, most often communicated on the official Essential X account - @essential. The Essential name is also now used for other AI based Nothing tools, such as Essential Space, Essential Voice and the Essential News widget available as part of Nothing OS.
